Where to find your Ford paint colour code
Your Ford's paint code is on the VIN plate in the door jamb. Here's where to look, what the code looks like, and how to find your colour if it's missing.

Where to look on your Ford
- Door jamb. Open the driver's door and check the B-pillar, the upright between the front and rear doors, for a label or plate. If it's not there, try the passenger side.
- Under the bonnet. On older Fords, like the Escort and Mondeo, the VIN plate is on the slam panel or an inner wing.
- Service book. Some cars have a copy of the label, or the colour written in, at the front of the service book.
What the code looks like
On UK Fords the paint code is a short code in the Paint box near the bottom of the VIN plate. On US-built models the door label shows EXT PNT followed by a two-character code, such as YZ (Oxford White) or UM (Agate Black).

- Call your local Ford dealership, ask for the Parts department, and give them your registration or VIN. They can look up the factory colour code.
- Search by colour. If you know the colour name or roughly what colour it is, filter our Ford colour codes by colour and year to narrow it down.

What you’ll need
Once you have the code, the finish tells you what to order. Ford colours fall into these groups:
Single-stage
Solid colours
One paint. It dries to a gloss finish, so no lacquer is needed.
1128 Ford colours
Two-stage
Metallic, pearl and most modern colours
Basecoat, then clear lacquer over the top. Matt colours need a matt lacquer instead.
2768 Ford colours
Three-stage
Pearl tri-coat colours
Basecoat, a pearl mid-coat, then clear lacquer. Order both paints together so they match.
